Ah, the Mishpacha magazine Passover package. It has now become the standard household item over the holiday. Its amazing, i still get great feedback even after Pesach about the magazine package. So inline with this attitude of giving feedback, it is high time that I gave some credit where it is due. To the amazing and talented graphic team. Mag issue 506. A historical piece based on an event during World War II. I wanted this article to have a book/movie poster feel. For inspiration I did not have to seek much farther than the 2D brilliance of Olly Moss. Looking at the body of work of Olly Moss will smack reminiscent of Saul Bass, a comparison Mr. Moss would gladly concede to. Moss's mastery is found in his ability to break things down to the simplest idea. So I took up the challenge to mimic, not in rendering, but rather in thinking, to sum up this article in one simple image. Trying my best to produce some Moss magic. Please see for your self some of Olly Moss work BTW My article could not have worked without the amazing free brushes offered by Chris Oatly.
Wow! My first cover working with Mishpacha!!! In case you haven't heard Mishpacha magazine is celebrating there 10 year anniversary. In honor of such a big milestone the magazine put together a rather herculean task of cramming 10 years into one supplement magazine. Pick up a copy and see how this publication waxes nostalgic on many topics. My favorite part is the pull out section of the covers over the past ten years. Looking at the art work is like looking at pictures from your high school yearbook, yes that scary! Funny how at the time I thought many of my ideas in design were groundbreaking, now make me want to look the other way. However, there have been a few covers over time that I still like looking at and included some in this post. Let me know what were yr favorite. Hands down my favorite was the cover "Truth Speaks Louder than a Pat Down" I got the idea from a Bloomberg News cover. (see below) I showed the idea to the editor, Shana Friedman in its infancy stage and I think she liked my enthusiasm of the idea more than what I actually was able to show her. But after the initial stage the editor gave me the encouragement to go with it and we worked out together the design. As always teamwork saves the day! |
